Salman Rushdie honored as Ambassador of Freedom at Pordenonelegge

Author Salman Rushdie appeared at the 27th edition of Pordenonelegge at Teatro Verdi to discuss literature, freedom of expression, and his recovery following the 2022 attack on his life. During the event, the Fondazione Pordenonelegge honored him with the new ‘Ambassador of Freedom’ award, recognizing his courage in continuing to write despite facing violence and threats.

Rushdie reflected on the process of writing about the assault, describing the experience as both painful and liberating. He noted that writing was essential for his return to imagination and fantasy. He also credited his wife for her fundamental role during his long and difficult rehabilitation, noting that she documented his recovery through photography.

Addressing the current state of global discourse, Rushdie remarked that while freedom of speech is under attack and facing significant pressure, writers remain obstinate in their pursuit of expression. He emphasized the importance of time, stating his personal motto is to ‘not waste time, use it for important things’ after realizing the fragility of life following his survival.
