Salmon Arm Fire Department Brad Shirley fire chief retirement Shirley family legacy Carmen Guidos

Brad Shirley, the fire chief of Salmon Arm, is retiring on September 11 after 44 years of service. His retirement concludes a multi-generational legacy within the Salmon Arm Fire Department, which began with his relative George Shirley as a charter member of the local fire brigade in the early 1900s.

Brad's father, Frederick “Pat” Shirley, also served 40 years in various roles, including fire chief. The family's involvement continued through Brad's brothers, Greg, Jim, and Brad. Deputy Fire Chief Carmen Guidos is set to succeed Brad as fire chief.

In a related development, Brad's wife, Jane Shirley, has also retired following more than 37 years of service as the executive director of the Shuswap Area Family Emergency (SAFE) Society.
