Salmon Arm historic city hall restoration to begin in October
The Shuswap Community Foundation (SCF) is preparing to begin the restoration of Salmon Arm’s original municipal hall, located at 31 Hudson Ave. NE. The foundation purchased the historic building from the city for $1 and intends to raise $1.45 million to convert the site into its future downtown offices.
McDiarmid Construction has been appointed as the construction manager for the project. The firm, which has experience with local heritage sites like the Old Courthouse, will contribute to the project through subsidized labor and administrative costs.
The restoration plan involves preserving the original 1928 front section of the building, designed by William Reader, while demolishing rear additions constructed in the 1970s and 1980s. Work is scheduled to commence in October, starting with the demolition of the additions, foundation stabilization, and exterior brickwork repairs. The interior will be renovated to create functional office space while maintaining historic features such as the original vault.
