Salmon populations in the Rhine face ongoing threats
Salmon populations in the Rhine and selected rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate face significant survival challenges despite extensive conservation efforts. Annual programs involve the release of over 200,000 young salmon to maintain stocks, supported by annual investments of approximately 240,000 euros from fishery authorities SGD Nord and Süd.
Environmental experts and the Ministry of the Environment identify several critical risks to these migratory fish. Key threats include poor water quality caused by municipal, industrial, and agricultural runoff, as well as physical hazards from shipping traffic.
Additionally, migratory barriers such as locks, weirs, turbines, and hydroelectric plants prevent many salmon from returning to their spawning grounds. Natural predators, including fish-eating birds and predatory fish like the catfish (Wels), further impact the survival rates of the species.
