Italian cherry tomatoes linked to salmonella outbreak in Europe

An outbreak of salmonella linked to Italian cherry tomatoes has caused over 130 infections in Italy, primarily in the Brescia and Bergamo provinces. The contamination involves two strains: Salmonella Typhimurium and Salmonella Strathcona. Italian authorities have launched an investigation, with early suspicions pointing toward contaminated irrigation water used in Sicilian fields.

Following a RASFF alert, it was confirmed that shipments of the contaminated tomatoes, specifically from producer G&V Ortaggi, were distributed to Croatia and Slovenia. In Croatia, the State Inspectorate confirmed that several hospitality businesses in the Istria and Primorje regions purchased the tomatoes from a Metro store in Trieste, Italy. These businesses have since been subject to inspections.

While no salmonella cases directly linked to these specific shipments have been reported in Croatia or Slovenia as of the latest updates, health authorities in those countries are monitoring the situation. In Italy, the outbreak has affected various age groups, including children, leading to several hospitalizations.
