Salou and Mallorca historical ties reinforced by 1241 document

A historical document dated October 12, 1241, has been identified that strengthens the historical connections between Salou and Mallorca. The document, part of the 'Llibre Manual de Pere Romeu' (a manual from a Mallorcan notary active between 1239 and 1243), was highlighted during a meeting between the Mayor of Salou and the Director of the Archive of the Kingdom of Mallorca.

The text consists of a power of attorney granted by Maria, daughter of Joan de Valls, to her husband, Guerau de Riells, to facilitate the sale of properties located ‘in termino de Salou’ (in the territory of Salou). These lands were under the dominion of the Archbishopric and the See of Tarragona.

This finding is significant because it proves that by the mid-13th century, Salou was already documented as a specific, recognizable territory with its own legal rights and properties. The date is also notable for being only twelve years after King Jaume I’s expedition to Mallorca, which departed from the natural port of Salou in 1229.
