Salou hosts festival commemorating Jaume I's expedition

The municipality of Salou is hosting the XXXI Festa del Rei Jaume I, a four-day event running from September 3 to 6 to commemorate the historical maritime expedition of King Jaume I.

On September 5, 1229, a massive fleet of over 150 vessels carrying thousands of armed men, livestock, and provisions departed from the natural port of Salou to begin the conquest of Mallorca, a pivotal moment in the expansion of the Crown of Aragon. To mark this anniversary, the town has transformed into a medieval setting featuring a market with nearly 100 stalls, expert conferences, exhibitions, and historical reenactments.

Participants in the festivities include a large procession of people dressed in period clothing, including knights, doctors, and officials, recreating the atmosphere of the 13th century. The event also includes historical displays such as catapults and wheeled towers to educate the public on the preparations that led to the 1229 expedition.
