Salt in Toilets Reduces Odor and Helps Minor Clogs

Adding ordinary table salt to a toilet bowl before sleeping or when a minor blockage occurs is a home‑care tip circulating in several countries. Users pour about half a cup to one cup of salt into the bowl, leave it for 6–8 hours (or 15–30 minutes for a light clog) without flushing, then scrub the interior and flush. The salt’s mild hygroscopic property and abrasive surface can loosen thin layers of soap scum, mineral deposits, and organic residue, making subsequent cleaning easier and reducing unpleasant smells.

Experts note that salt is not a true drain‑clearing agent and will not dissolve solid obstructions such as excess toilet paper, plastic items, or hair. Its effect is limited to softening light deposits and providing a modest antibacterial benefit. For severe clogs or hardened scale, commercial cleaners or professional plumbing are still required. The practice is sometimes combined with baking soda for additional odor neutralisation, but mixing with harsh chemicals is discouraged.
