Salt Lake City International Airport completes $5.1 billion redevelopment

Salt Lake City International Airport has reached the final milestone of its 12-year, $5.1 billion redevelopment program. The project, which broke ground in July 2014, concludes with the opening of seven new gates and six concessions in Concourse B on October 27.

Upon completion, the airport will feature 94 aircraft gates, four hardstand positions, and 101 concessions. The new gates will primarily serve United Airlines, though two are designated as common-use gates for other carriers. The redevelopment is noted by officials as the first new U.S. airline hub airport built in the 21st century.

The project was financed through an enterprise fund model, utilizing airport funds, passenger facility charges, and rental-car customer facility charges, rather than local tax dollars. Looking ahead, airport management is already considering future expansions, including runway improvements in preparation for the 2034 Winter Olympics.
