Northern Argentina demands mandatory railway investments in Belgrano Cargas tender

Governors and industrial unions in Northern Argentina are demanding that the national government include mandatory infrastructure investments in the Belgrano Cargas railway tender. Specifically, leaders from Salta, Jujuy, and Tucumán are calling for the C14 and C15 railway branches to be designated as compulsory works rather than optional ones for future concessionaires.

Salta Governor Gustavo Sáenz emphasized that these branches, which connect the region to Chile and Bolivia, are vital for regional integration. He warned that leaving these works to the discretion of private companies could leave the north without essential transport for decades. Currently, logistics costs for northern producers are significantly higher than in the central regions, with some transporting goods to the port of Rosario at costs up to 40% of the product value.

Industrial unions (UNINOR) and regional business tables have joined the call, arguing that the current tender terms risk further marginalizing the northern provinces. They suggest that a functional railway service could reduce freight costs by 20% to 30%, boosting the competitiveness of local sectors such as mining, agriculture, and bioethanol production.
