Cybercrime alerts issued in Argentina and Spain

Authorities in Argentina and Spain are issuing warnings regarding various digital fraud schemes targeting vulnerable populations and taxpayers.

In Argentina, the Agencia de Recaudación y Control Aduanero (ARCA) has alerted citizens to phishing emails impersonating the agency to claim tax debts. Officials emphasize that ARCA never requests payments or personal data via email or social media. Additionally, the Salta Police warned of fraudulent collection campaigns exploiting religious pilgrims, while a mother in Argentina reported that a scammer created a fraudulent alias to intercept donations intended for her son’s medical treatment in Mexico.

In Spain, the Policía Nacional has identified new WhatsApp scams. These include criminals hijacking accounts through mobile vulnerabilities to request money from contacts, and a method where scammers send “view once” photos containing sensitive content to extort money from recipients. Furthermore, a court in Tarragona ruled that a bank must reimburse a client who lost over 11,000 euros to a telephone scam where criminals impersonated bank employees.
