Salta's Justicialist Party names Julio Argentino San Millán president as lemas law remains unregulated

Interventor José Luis Napoleón Gambetta announced that the Justicialist Party (PJ) of Salta will transfer its leadership to Julio Argentino San Millán without holding the internal elections scheduled for 2 August 2026. San Millán, a former provincial senator, national senator and minister of Social Welfare, will head the party after a consensus among the main Peronist factions avoided internal competition. The move ends weeks of negotiations following a national intervention that had suspended the party's authorities.

Meanwhile, opposition leader Roque Cornejo warned that the province's newly approved law of lemas has not been issued any implementing decree, leaving the electoral rules in limbo. He accused the executive, legislative and judicial branches of colluding to keep the law frozen, complicating campaign planning for the upcoming 2026 provincial elections. The lack of regulation is described as an institutional scandal that could undermine the fairness of the electoral process.
