Saltillo train disaster historical international press coverage

Research conducted by Carlos Recio Dávila, a professor at the Universidad Autónoma de Coahuila, has reconstructed how the 1972 Saltillo train disaster was reported by the international press. The investigation highlights how the magnitude of the tragedy reached global media through wire photos and international news agencies.

Key findings include aerial photographs distributed by the Associated Press and Reuters, which depicted rescue efforts and the wreckage. The American magazine Life published a color photograph showing two derailed carriages nearly fused together. Additionally, the French newspaper Le Monde reported on the event, citing early official figures of approximately 180 fatalities. While local coverage focused on different aspects, international media primarily emphasized the scale of the destruction and the death toll.
