Salto Grande Dam marks 80 years of regional energy history

The Salto Grande hydroelectric complex is approaching its 80th anniversary of the historic agreement signed by Juan Perón and the Uruguayan presidency in 1946. Originally proposed by the Soler Urquiza family during the 1890 crisis, the project was eventually integrated into the Argentine Five-Year Plan.

While the dam has served as a vital link between Entre Ríos, Argentina, and Uruguay, its legacy remains a subject of debate. Critics highlight significant social and environmental costs, including the flooding of 30,000 hectares and the forced relocation of the city of Federación to Nueva Federación. There are also ongoing local grievances regarding high electricity costs in Concordia and allegations of political patronage within the Binational Entity (CTM).

The complex is currently preparing for its largest historical investment, which involves the phased replacement and repair of all turbines to maintain service continuity.
