Distrito Federal implements first involuntary hospitalizations under new mental health law
The Distrito Federal has implemented its first involuntary hospitalizations of homeless individuals following the approval of Law 7.923/2026. The law regulates non-consensual psychiatric commitment in exceptional cases involving severe mental health crises, such as imminent danger of death or violent behavior, requiring medical authorization.
To support patients after discharge, the government has established a protocol involving the Health Secretariat (SES-DF) and social services. This process aims to identify family ties, facilitate reintegration through public housing and employment programs, or provide placement in public shelters to prevent individuals from returning to the streets. The measure has sparked debate regarding individual liberties and the distinction between medical necessity and urban cleaning efforts.
