Saltpond leaders call for national political heritage centre in Ghana

Ernest De-Graft Egyir, President of the Mfantseman-Saltpond Development Alliance (MSDA), has called for the establishment of a National Political History and Heritage Centre in Saltpond, Ghana. The proposal aims to preserve the nation’s journey from colonial rule to independence by documenting the contributions of political movements, traditional authorities, and ordinary citizens.

Egyir emphasized that Saltpond holds significant historical importance, noting that both the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC) and the Convention People’s Party (CPP) were formed there. He urged President John Dramani Mahama, the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and the Ghana Tourism Authority to prioritize this development to transform the town’s heritage assets into opportunities for research, civic education, and tourism.

To support these economic goals, the MSDA and private investors have reportedly invested GH¢15 million into Saltpond to develop modern hotels and services. The initiative seeks to integrate Saltpond’s landmarks, such as Canaan Lodge and the historic party offices, into Ghana’s broader heritage tourism offering to drive employment and community development.
