Traffic fatalities reported in Santiago and Tunja amid rising insurance costs
Multiple traffic incidents and regulatory changes have been reported across various regions. In Costa Rica, the Superintendencia General de Seguros (Sugese) announced that mandatory automobile insurance premiums (SOA) will rise by an average of 4.03% for 2027. This increase is attributed to rising accident rates, with motorcyclists accounting for 52.4% of deaths and 64% of injuries in 2025. Buses are expected to see the highest rate hike at 12.4%.
Fatal accidents occurred in Santiago, Dominican Republic, where a 30-year-old man died following a motorcycle collision on the Duarte highway, leaving a woman seriously injured. In Tunja, Colombia, a 32-year-old pedestrian was killed after being struck by an ambulance from the ESE Hospital Metropolitano Santiago while it was responding to an emergency.
Additionally, in the Dominican Republic, a 41-year-old motorcyclist sustained multiple injuries, including possible rib fractures, after colliding with a truck on the Hato Mayor-Yerba Buena highway.
