Salvador Alvarado cattle slaughter drops 35 percent

Cattle slaughter at the Rastro Municipal in Salvador Alvarado, Sinaloa, has decreased by approximately 35 percent during 2026 compared to the previous year. Administrator Diego Inzunza Inzunza reported that daily processing currently averages between seven and ten cattle, with some days recording as few as four.

While beef activity has declined, pork slaughter remains stable, averaging between 12 and 20 animals per day. Demand for pork saw a temporary increase in September due to traditional celebrations involving pozole, with some days reaching 25 pigs processed. Conversely, sheep slaughter has been almost entirely halted for the past four to five months due to low supply.

Approximately 80 percent of the processed meat is distributed to the Municipal Market, while the remainder supplies local butcher shops. The facility maintains sanitary protocols, including veterinary inspections of all organs and animals to ensure food safety and to prevent issues such as the screwworm.
