Issoire art center theft: Salvador Dalí book cover stolen

A unique and monumental art piece, the “Book of Revelation” (Livre de l’Apocalypse), was stolen during the night of Sunday, October 4, from the Issoire Contemporary Art Center in Auvergne, France. The stolen component is the book's massive bronze cover, designed and sculpted by Salvador Dalí, which weighs approximately 150 kilograms and is decorated with gold, precious stones, and seashells.

The complete work, a collaborative project initiated by art publisher Joseph Forêt between 1958 and 1961, weighs a total of 210 kilograms and consists of 150 parchment sheets. The book features contributions from fourteen prominent 20th-century artists and writers, including Jean Cocteau, Bernard Buffet, and Jean Giono.

The owner of the center, collector Christian Karoutzos, described the theft as an attack on French cultural heritage. The Clermont-Ferrand Public Prosecutor's Office has characterized the work as an “exceptional and unique piece” and has launched an investigation, entrusting the case to the research brigade of the Clermont-Ferrand gendarmerie. Authorities are currently investigating how such a heavy object was removed from the premises.
