Federal Reserve and ECB raise interest rates to combat inflation
The Federal Reserve and the European Central Bank (ECB) have shifted toward more restrictive monetary policies in response to persistent inflation. On September 16, the Federal Reserve raised its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points, bringing the target range to 3.75% to 4.00%. This decision was reached via a unanimous 12-0 vote and marks the first rate hike by the Fed since July 2023.
Similarly, the ECB increased its three key interest rates by 25 basis points on September 10, raising the deposit rate to 2.50%. While previous market expectations leaned toward rate cuts to support economic cycles, the resurgence of inflationary pressure has forced central banks to prioritize price stability.
Bank of America analysts anticipate further rate increases from both institutions. In the United States, the Fed's aggressive stance has increased expectations that the policy rate could reach approximately 5%. In the Eurozone, inflation is projected to average 3.0% in 2026 before gradually declining.
