Salvador football violence leaves two dead and six arrested
Violence erupted in Salvador, Brazil, surrounding the Ba-Vi football derby between Bahia and Vitória, resulting in two deaths and multiple injuries.
José Alexandre Souza Borges, 28, a member of the Bamor supporters group, was killed by blade weapons near the Barradão stadium. On the same day, 19-year-old Lucas dos Reis Bomfim, also a Bamor member, died from gunshot wounds. Police investigations suggest the attacks were carried out by members of Os Imbatíveis, a Vitória supporters group.
Authorities arrested six men in flagrante for their involvement in the homicide and attempted murder of four others. The suspects were found with knives, brass knuckles, and homemade explosives. Approximately 60 people were detained following riots and vandalism in the city.
In addition to the fatalities, the unrest caused damage to public transport, including three vandalized buses, and several commercial establishments. Bahia Governor Jerônimo Rodrigues and Security Secretary Marcelo Werner condemned the acts, with Werner describing the violence as ‘savagery’ and ‘cowardice.’
