Salvador Illa commemorates Lluís Companys anniversary

On the 86th anniversary of the execution of Lluís Companys, the President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, participated in an offering at the Montjuïc Cemetery. During the ceremony, Illa called for the defense of democratic values and the rejection of authoritarianism, urging citizens to “remember where we come from so as not to repeat the mistakes of the past.”

In addition to the commemoration, Illa noted the Court of Auditors' decision to amnesty approximately thirty individuals prosecuted regarding the October 1st events and external actions of the independence process, describing it as a positive step toward the “political, social, and institutional normalization of Catalonia.”

Meanwhile, memorial organizations such as the Commission of Dignity and the Council of the Republic continue to demand formal institutional reparations from the Spanish State. While the Spanish government declared the Francoist courts that sentenced Companys to be illegal and null in July 2024, activists argue that a formal, public apology is still required to acknowledge the State's direct involvement in the execution.
