Salvador Illa inaugurates the Year of Tarradellas in Catalonia

The ‘Year of Tarradellas’ has officially commenced, marking the 50th anniversary of the return of Josep Tarradellas and the restoration of Catalan self-governing institutions. The inaugural ceremony at the Palau de la Generalitat was presided over by President Salvador Illa.

During the event, Illa emphasized Tarradellas’s legacy as a foundation for modern Catalonia, noting his commitment to a national project that transcended specific ideologies and prioritized civil unity. Illa highlighted key principles of Tarradellas’s leadership, including the defense of autonomy, professionalized administration, and the belief that the prosperity of Catalonia is linked to the prosperity of Spain.

Other notable attendees included Parliament President Josep Rull and ERC leader Oriol Junqueras. Rull described Tarradellas as a ‘providential figure’ with a profound sense of national transcendence, while also reflecting on the historical significance of exile.
