Salvador intensifies tobacco control and lung cancer prevention

The Salvador Municipal Health Secretariat (SMS) is intensifying tobacco prevention and control efforts through the Municipal Smoking Control Program (PMCT). As part of ‘Agosto Branco’—a month dedicated to lung cancer awareness and prevention—local health units are increasing educational activities regarding the risks and damages caused by tobacco use.

Currently, the PMCT is monitoring 511 individuals in support groups. Since January of this year, 511 people have participated in these groups, contributing to a broader strategy that has recorded over 2,500 services between 2023 and April 2026. The program provides educational activities, monitoring, and treatment to help citizens quit smoking and improve access to municipal healthcare services.
