Salvador Mayor Bruno Reis Pushes Teacher Payments and Municipal College Initiative

Mayor Bruno Reis of Salvador announced the submission of a bill to the city council authorising the first tranche of Fundef precatório payments to about 6,500 municipal teachers who served between 1998 and 2006. The proposal earmarks R$93 million and seeks priority handling so the funds can be paid directly through payroll once approved.

Separately, councilor Sandro Bahiense introduced a study to assess the creation of Salvador’s first municipal university, proposing the historic former Colégio Nossa Senhora das Mercês as the campus site. The initiative aims to broaden public higher‑education access, revitalize the city centre and explore municipal acquisition of the building.
