Salvador Metro to Receive 10 New Trains After R$490 Million State Investment

The Bahia state government has approved a R$490.4 million investment to expand the fleet of the Salvador metro system serving Lines 1 and 2 and the Lauro de Freitas branch. Ten new four‑car train sets will be procured.

The contract was awarded to the CRRC Changchun consortium, which includes CRRC Changchun do Brasil Railway Equipamentos e Serviços Ltda. and the Chinese manufacturer CRRC Changchun Railway Vehicles Co. Ltd. The consortium had previously been disqualified for not meeting technical and documentary requirements linked to BNDES financing, but the bid was later re‑validated. The French Alstom consortium, initially expected to become the runner‑up, was not called to replace the Chinese group. No delivery schedule or start‑of‑service date was disclosed in the official notice.

The procurement aims to boost capacity on the metropolitan network, though the timeline for the new trains to enter operation remains unclear.
