Brazil issues multiple prison sentences for violent crimes
Various judicial rulings in Brazil have resulted in significant prison sentences for violent crimes. In Bahia, Josevan Dionísio dos Santos was sentenced to 28 years in prison for the 2023 murder of quilombola leader Maria Bernadete Pacífico Moreira. The killing, which occurred in Simões Filho, was allegedly motivated by her opposition to drug trafficking in the Pitanga dos Palmares community. He is the third defendant convicted in the case.
In Rio de Janeiro, four men received 15-year sentences for the gang rape of a 17-year-old girl in Copacabana. The court also ordered the payment of 40 minimum wages in moral damages to the victim.
Other notable convictions include a 75-year sentence for the femicide of Tatiane Rodrigues Teixeira in Patos de Minas, and a 13-year sentence for an attempted femicide in Santa Cruz do Capibaribe. Additionally, a man was sentenced to 18 years for the sexual abuse of a minor in Mato Grosso do Sul, and another received 16 years for abusing a student in Itacoatiara. In Paraíso do Tocantins, a man was sentenced to four years for stealing tithes from a parish.
