Salvador VLT begins experimental trips as Bahia studies rail expansion

The Light Rail Vehicle (VLT) project in Salvador, Brazil, has entered a new phase with the commencement of experimental trips. These tests aim to evaluate the system's operation and demonstrate its functionality to the public. The routes include segments such as Calçada–Feira de São Joaquim, Calçada–Porto das Sardinhas, and Porto das Sardinhas–Estação Acesso Norte. The VLT is intended to replace the old urban train system in the Subúrbio Ferroviário, improving mobility and connecting with the metro and bus networks.

Simultaneously, the government of Bahia is conducting feasibility studies to expand the rail network beyond the capital. While initial plans focused on extending the system to Alagoinhas, officials are now considering an extension to Juazeiro, near the border with Pernambuco. The state government is seeking approximately R$ 16 million for these studies and has engaged a startup from the University of Rome to assist with technology regarding the integration of passenger and freight services. Discussions are also ongoing regarding the potential implementation of higher-speed intercity trains as an alternative or complement to the VLT system.
