Salvadoran cargo transport leader addresses rising road accidents

Raúl Alfaro, president of the Salvadoran Association of International Cargo Transporters (ASTIC), has addressed the rising concerns regarding heavy cargo transport accidents in El Salvador. Alfaro noted that responsibility for the current situation is shared among transporters, drivers, and government agencies, specifically citing a lack of effective oversight from the Ministry of Transport (VMT) and Customs.

According to data from the National Road Safety Observatory (ONASEVI), heavy cargo vehicles were involved in 1,199 road accidents between January 1 and October 7. While the total number of accidents decreased compared to the same period last year, fatalities involving cargo transport rose from 52 to 72. Additionally, injuries caused by these vehicles increased from 417 to 503 during the same timeframe.
