Salvadoran immigrants face deportation as TPS expires

More than 170,000 Salvadoran citizens in the United States face the expiration of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS) on September 9. The end of this program would leave beneficiaries without legal work authorization and expose them to immediate deportation orders.

Advocacy groups, including the Association of Salvadorans of Los Angeles (ASOSAL), report widespread panic and uncertainty among families. Legal experts suggest a renewal is unlikely under the administration of President Donald Trump, particularly following Supreme Court rulings that affirmed executive authority to revoke TPS.

The TPS program for El Salvador was originally established in 2001 following devastating earthquakes. While the TPS Alliance is calling on the U.S. Congress to approve a permanent solution or an extension, the current political climate and previous attempts by the administration to cancel the status for various nations have created significant legal hurdles for those seeking to maintain their residency and employment.
