Salvation Army expands ex‑inmate support program in Tasmania

The Salvation Army has extended its "Beyond the Wire" program, which was launched in Hobart in 2018, to the north of Tasmania, establishing a presence in Launceston. The initiative provides case managers who work with prisoners before release and continue to assist them with housing, employment and reintegration, aiming to break cycles of re‑offending.

In Shoalhaven, New South Wales, HammondCare home‑care worker Karen Gleeson intervened when 89‑year‑old Margaret Baker attempted to purchase discounted children’s pyjamas from a fraudulent online source. Gleeson helped cancel the pending transaction, arranged a new credit card and educated Baker on how to spot scams. Gleeson received a HammondCare "Mission in Action" award for her quick action and the organisation highlighted the growing need for staff to protect vulnerable clients from financial abuse.
