Salvatore Deidda proposes direct migrant repatriations from Sardinia to Algeria

Salvatore Deidda, a Member of Parliament for Fratelli d'Italia and Chairman of the Chamber's Transport Commission, has proposed a new system for the direct repatriation of migrants from Sardinia to Algeria. In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Ministers Matteo Piantedosi and Antonio Tajani, Deidda suggests utilizing existing maritime commercial routes between the port of Cagliari and Algeria to facilitate deportations.

The proposal aims to end the current practice of transferring migrants from southern Sardinia to northern ports like Olbia, Livorno, or Civitavecchia. Deidda argues that the current method shifts public order tensions and logistical burdens onto other Italian territories and civilian carriers.

Deidda also highlighted an alarming increase in migrant arrivals from Algeria toward the southern Sardinian coast over the past year. Citing investigations by the District Anti-Mafia Directorate (DDA), he characterized the movement not as a humanitarian route, but as a criminal business involving human trafficking and drug smuggling managed by networks such as the ‘Harraga’.
