Davide Fontana sentenced to life for premeditated murder of Carol Maltesi

The Milan Court of Assizes has sentenced Davide Fontana to life imprisonment for the premeditated murder of his former partner, Carol Maltesi. This verdict comes after a complex judicial process involving six trials and multiple annulments by the Supreme Court regarding the aggravating factor of premeditation.

In January 2022, the 46-year-old former banker killed the 26-year-old Maltesi in her home in Rescaldina. The crime involved extreme violence, including the use of a hammer and a knife. Following the murder, Fontana dismembered the body, kept the remains in a freezer for several weeks, and eventually disposed of them in bags in a landfill in the Brescia province.

While the defense argued for a sentence based on impulse rather than planning, the court upheld the premeditation charge, citing evidence such as the defendant's preparation for the crime and the post-mortem actions. The victim's family expressed a mix of relief and ongoing grief following the decision.
