Salvatore Quasimodo: Nobel laureate and his connection to Balatonfüred

Salvatore Quasimodo, the Nobel Prize-winning Italian poet and leader of the Hermeticism movement, is remembered for his profound literary contributions and his personal connection to Balatonfüred, Hungary.

Born in Sicily in 1901, Quasimodo initially studied mathematics and physics in Rome before transitioning from a career in technical design to full-time literature. His work, characterized by a focus on the sound and transcendental reality of words, earned him international acclaim, culminating in the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1959.

Following a heart attack during a visit to the Soviet Union in 1956, Quasimodo recovered his health in Balatonfüred in 1961. To commemorate his recovery, he planted a tree on the Tagore Promenade and composed poetry inspired by the Balaton landscape. His later works often addressed themes of humanism, the horrors of war, and the complexities of modern society.
