Salviano tunnel construction suspended after major traffic delays
Construction works at the Salviano tunnel on the Superstrada del Liri have been suspended following severe traffic disruptions. The implementation of alternating one-way traffic caused significant congestion, with queues reaching eight kilometers toward Avezzano and over four kilometers in the opposite direction. Commuters experienced travel times of up to 90 minutes for the one-kilometer stretch.
Local mayors from the Valle Roveto and Marsica regions held a meeting to demand changes to the construction management. They proposed concentrating work during nighttime hours to ensure two-way traffic remains available during the day. Anas is currently evaluating how to proceed, including the possibility of a permanent suspension of the works, balancing safety requirements with the economic and social impact on the local community.
While the tunnel has since reopened to two-way traffic and current conditions are reported as normal, the future of the scheduled interventions remains unclear as no construction signage or personnel were present following the recent delays.
