Italy commemorates Salvo D’Acquisto 83 years after his sacrifice
Various ceremonies were held across Italy to mark the 83rd anniversary of the sacrifice of Salvo D’Acquisto, a Carabinieri vice-brigadier who died on September 23, 1943. D’Acquisto famously took responsibility for an accidental explosion involving German paratroopers near Torre di Palidoro, choosing to face execution in place of 22 innocent civilians.
Commemorations took place in several locations, including Fiumicino, where ceremonies included wreath-laying at Borgo di Palidoro, Torre di Palidoro, and Passoscuro. The General Commander of the Carabinieri, Salvatore Luongo, participated in the events, emphasizing D’Acquisto’s role as an eternal symbol of courage and moral rebirth for the nation. Other ceremonies were held in Varese and Taranto, where authorities gathered to honor his legacy of altruism and duty.
Recently, the Catholic Church declared D’Acquisto “Venerable,” adding a religious dimension to his historical recognition as a hero of the Arma dei Carabinieri.
