Salzburg and Frankfurt implement heat protection for schools
Municipalities in Salzburg and Frankfurt are implementing strategies to protect schools from rising temperatures and heatwaves.
In Salzburg, officials plan to retrofit classrooms with blinds and increase greenery to combat solar radiation. For new constructions, the city aims to establish standards that include canopies, reduced glass surfaces, and external sun protection. Additionally, there are plans to utilize school rooftops for photovoltaic systems, with excess energy intended for local energy cooperatives.
Frankfurt is adopting a tiered heat protection strategy focused on prevention. The city’s building department emphasizes preventing heat from entering buildings through architectural design and passive cooling, such as efficient nighttime ventilation. For existing structures, the city prioritizes sun protection films, external shading, and insulation over air conditioning. Pilot projects are currently testing new technologies to manage indoor temperatures.
