Salzburg begins major infrastructure and festival district construction

Major infrastructure and development projects are commencing in Salzburg, leading to significant traffic disruptions and pedestrian diversions.

A large-scale construction project at Makartplatz is set to last until summer 2029. With an investment of approximately nine million euros from the City of Salzburg and Salzburg AG, the project aims to renew aging sewage systems—some over 130 years old—and upgrade water, heating, gas, electricity, and telecommunications lines. Work will proceed in stages, beginning in Schwarzstraße and Josef-Friedrich-Hummel-Straße, with Makartplatz following in early 2027.

Simultaneously, the ‘Festspielbezirk 2030’ project is moving into a new phase. This involves creating underground space within the Mönchsberg to support the Salzburg Festival, including rehearsal rooms and logistics areas. Preparatory work has already led to pedestrian closures near Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz.

A major disruption is expected starting September 14, when the Neutor will be closed to all traffic for approximately six months to facilitate cavern construction. This closure will affect roughly 9,000 vehicles daily and require significant rerouting for bus lines 1, 8, 10, and 22. Following the initial six-month period, Neutor will remain restricted to a single lane for residents, deliveries, and public transport.
