Salzburg City Ends Free Public Urinals for Men

The municipal government of Salzburg has decided to discontinue the remaining free public urinals (pissoirs) in the historic old town. Vice‑mayor Kay‑Michael Dank (KPÖ Plus) confirmed that the facilities will now be placed behind a pay barrier, with a uniform charge of €1 per use – up from the previous €0.50 for other restroom facilities.

The policy change is presented as a measure to eliminate the gender‑based price disparity that allowed men to urinate for free while women always paid for toilet use. Officials argue that equalising the cost treats all users the same, though critics note that women still face practical disadvantages because they cannot use the urinals at all and must make more frequent visits to paid facilities.
