Salzburg debates redesign of Red Cross parking lot

In Salzburg, a debate has resurfaced regarding the redesign or alternative use of the Red Cross parking lot located near the Salzach river in the old town. While various proposals have been suggested, including transforming the area into a recreational zone or a space for small concerts, Mayor Bernhard Auinger has highlighted significant financial obstacles.

The city currently pays nearly 1.5 million euros annually to the Red Cross as a rescue contribution. Additionally, parking fees from the Salzach parking lot generate approximately 500,000 euros per year to fund Red Cross services beyond emergency response.

Mayor Auinger noted that any redesign would require an investment of at least one million euros, necessitating a plan for counter-financing. Consequently, he is maintaining his proposal to convert the lot into dedicated parking for local residents and tradespeople, citing a long waiting list for permanent parking permits in the old town garages.
