Salzburg establishes Hormonal Intelligence Initiative research center
A new research institution, the Hormonal Intelligence Initiative, has been founded in Salzburg, Austria, to investigate how hormonal fluctuations influence mental health. Led by neuroscientist Belinda Pletzer, the center currently employs six staff members.
The initiative focuses on life stages characterized by significant hormonal shifts, such as puberty, pregnancy, and menopause. By studying how changes in hormones like estrogen and progesterone affect brain regions responsible for mood and stress processing, researchers aim to develop methods for early detection and prevention of mental health issues.
The center’s inaugural study will focus on menopause, specifically seeking to identify risk factors for depression before women enter this life stage. Pletzer, whose previous research on the effects of contraceptive pills on the brain gained international attention, noted that hormonal responses are highly individual and depend on both the specific active ingredients and the person's current life stage.
