The Salzburg Festival 2026 features a new production of Richard Strauss and Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s opera ‘Ariadne auf Naxos’. Directed by Ersan Mondtag, the production is described as an extraterrestrial thought experiment set in a barren Mars landscape, exploring themes of art, loneliness, and the search for a new life.

Musical direction is provided by Manfred Honeck, conducting the Vienna Philharmonic. The production features Christina Nilsson as Ariadne, Ziyi Dai as Zerbinetta, Kate Lindsey as the young composer, and Eric Cutler as Bacchus. The performance utilizes the second version of the opera, which was first premiered in 1916.

A television broadcast of the production was aired on 3sat, with direction by Leopold Knötzl and hosting by Teresa Vogl.
