Salzburg Festival scandal detailed in new book

A 96‑page book titled *Das Salzburger Große Affentheater. Vom Ende der Ära Markus Hinterhäuser* has been released by former Klangforum Wien director Sven Hartberger. The publication, timed for the opening of the Salzburg Festival, examines the contentious events of winter and spring that led to the dismissal of festival intendant Markus Hinterhäuser. Hartberger accuses the festival’s governing board of overstepping its authority, citing intrique, denigration and abuse of power by board chair Karoline Edtstadler (ÖVP) and Salzburg mayor Bernhard Auinger (SPÖ). The book claims decisions were driven by personal ego rather than artistic concerns and highlights a lack of transparency regarding financial impacts. It also documents Hartberger’s long‑standing, sometimes strained relationship with Hinterhäuser and includes a detailed document appendix.

The book’s release has reignited public debate over the management of the historic cultural institution and the role of political figures in its governance.
