Salzburg Festival stages avant‑garde production of Goethe's 'Faust

The Salzburg Festival in Austria is presenting a new staging of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe’s drama ‘Faust’ on the Pernerinsel in Hallein. Directed by Ulrich Rasche, the production uses a constantly rotating floor and a stripped‑down set, with actors in business‑style costumes that gradually shed clothing as the three‑hour show progresses. Rasche said, “I want to show that this aesthetic also works with a limitation and that there is great richness in it – the very nucleus of theater: the actors.”

The cast includes German actor Steven Scharf as Faust, Valery Tscheplanowa as Mephistopheles, Anna Drexler as Margarete, and Johannes Nussbaum as the younger Faust. The minimalist scenery and moving stage are intended to focus attention on the text and the conflict between Faust’s endless quest for knowledge and the devil’s temptations.
