Sam Altman defends AI data center water use amid infrastructure backlash

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has addressed growing public concerns regarding the environmental impact of artificial intelligence, specifically dismissing claims that AI data centers consume excessive water as a “meme.” Altman argued that modern data centers typically use water volumes comparable to large office buildings, a claim supported by 2024 reports from Virginia. Despite these assertions, public resistance to data center construction remains high, with surveys indicating significant American opposition due to environmental and resource concerns.

In a separate strategic move, major AI companies including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have signed onto Canada’s new Responsible Data Centre Development Principles. This framework aims to ensure that data center expansion in Canada is done transparently, minimizes water use, and does not shift electricity costs to local consumers.

Amidst the domestic backlash in the United States, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has proposed the unconventional idea of placing data centers in Earth orbit to utilize solar power and alleviate pressure on terrestrial resources, though the concept remains theoretical.
