Sam Altman advocates for human control over superintelligent AI

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that human control must remain a fundamental requirement for the development of artificial intelligence. In a post on X, Altman argued that people should not cede decision-making power to increasingly autonomous and advanced superintelligent systems.

Altman expressed opposition to the idea that humans could eventually be relegated to performing tasks that AI systems deem worthy of reward. He emphasized that the requirement for human oversight should serve as a constraint on AI progress to ensure that people remain in control of the future.

These remarks align with ongoing industry debates regarding the pace of AI development and necessary safeguards. Altman has previously supported calls to pace frontier development and has advocated for giving independent evaluators access to AI systems to assess safety. He also reiterated the importance of human oversight during discussions at the United Nations Security Council.
