Sam Altman Calls for US‑Led International AI Safety Framework
OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman wrote an opinion piece in the Financial Times urging the United States to lead the creation of a global governance framework for advanced artificial‑intelligence systems. He proposes a U.S.-headed forum that would establish common safety standards, testing procedures and certification processes, allowing access to the most capable AI models only for countries and companies that comply with agreed rules. Altman said the proposal was discussed at the recent G7 leaders’ meeting in France, where AI risk mitigation was a central topic. He argues that uniform standards are essential to harness AI’s benefits while preventing malicious use and concentrating power in a few firms. The suggested framework would involve government representatives, independent scientists and experts to oversee compliance and evaluate AI capabilities and dangers.
