Sam Altman notes slower AI revolution pace amid Meta automation efforts

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged that the pace of the artificial intelligence revolution has been slower than initially anticipated. Altman noted that economic inertia and existing human workflows have prevented the immediate, massive disruption he expected following the release of GPT-4 in 2023.

In contrast, internal reports regarding Meta indicate more aggressive attempts to integrate AI into the workforce. Under a plan codenamed ‘Project OT’ (Organization Transformation), Meta leadership explored scenarios where AI could automate significant portions of daily tasks, potentially reducing certain team sizes by up to 60 percent.

Meta has stated that these plans were scenario exercises rather than finalized mandates. However, the company faced internal scrutiny after implementing software to track employee keystrokes and mouse movements. Meta defended the move as a way to collect data to train AI agents to better understand human computer usage, while employees expressed concerns that the data could be used to train their own replacements.
