Sam LaPorta expresses frustration over Detroit Lions contract stalemate

Detroit Lions tight end Sam LaPorta has voiced significant frustration regarding the lack of a long-term contract extension with the team. Speaking on the ‘Pardon My Take’ podcast, LaPorta suggested the organization is ‘not showing the love’ following his high-level performance and previous injury struggles.

LaPorta, who is in the final year of his rookie contract, highlighted the physical risks of the sport, noting that he suffered a season-ending back injury in 2025. He stated, ‘It’s disappointing that you go out there every week and you bear the risk of getting hurt. Like last year... I break my f---ing back for the team.’

While earlier reports indicated that negotiations had reached a stalemate, LaPorta indicated he is prepared to seek employment elsewhere if a deal is not reached. He noted that if he is not playing in ‘Honolulu blue’ in three months, he will ‘go get paid somewhere else.’

NFL insider Adam Schefter reported a potential update to the situation, suggesting that while LaPorta will eventually receive a new contract, it may not occur until after the current 2026 season concludes.
