Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport runway to close for repairs
The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has announced a proposed temporary closure of the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri. The closure is tentatively scheduled to begin on October 20, 2026, and is expected to last approximately 25 days.
The maintenance is required to address runway deterioration, including potholes and surface cracking caused by heavy rainfall. The rehabilitation project will involve pavement repairs, crack treatment, and resurfacing to ensure safe operations ahead of the increased holiday travel season.
Additionally, the project includes extending the runway to allow the airport to accommodate wide-body aircraft as regional traffic grows. FAAN has advised passengers to coordinate with their airlines regarding flight schedules and alternative arrangements during the maintenance period.
